Windows Phone 7 Hits 50,000 Apps

Windows Relevant Products/Services Phone 7 is still a relatively small player in the application vending market, but a bit less so these days as Microsoft Relevant Products/Services shows some impressive growth in offerings for the struggling platform.

Last August, the Windows Phone Marketplace reached a milestone of 30,000 available apps Relevant Products/Services, and now that number seems to have reached 50,000, just over a year since it was first launched in Europe in October 2010.

An independent Web site, All About Windows Phone, citing numbers from its own tracking system, reported on Dec. 27 that the Windows Phone Marketplace "has passed the 50,000 app and games submission mark. Content is being added at the rate of 265 items per day." With a few days left of December, the site said "50,126 items had been published, 17,276 of them added in the last 90 days and 8,010 added in the last 30 days.

Rapid Expansion

The offerings are from 13,002 different publishers, and the pace has accelerated rapidly in recent months as Nokia launches its Windows devices and the platform reaches more countries.

But AAWP pointed out that, just as is the case in other markets, the actual number of Windows offerings is lower than the published figure, with just under 6,000 Windows apps removed by Microsoft or the publisher.

"The 50,000 mark, which has been reached sooner than we estimated, is a key milestone, but more important is the accelerating growth of the Marketplace," wrote AAWP's Rafe Blandford. "It took just over a year to get to 40,000 apps, but just 40 days to add the next 10,000 apps. That bodes well for Windows Phone in 2012."

The soaring mobile Relevant Products/Services market, which includes smartphones, iPods and tablets, has created an app explosion. Earlier this month, Mobilewalla, a research firm specializing in the mobile marketplace, reported that 2,000 apps are posted each day, and in the past year Apple's iTunes App Store increased its offerings from 338,000 to 589,148, while Google's Android Relevant Products/Services Market soared from 115,000 to 319,774. The point of 1 million apps may be near, the firm said.

Whether or not this benefits consumers is questionable since no user has the time or desire to shop through potentially thousands of offerings in a designated category while browsing.

'Robust App Community'

But Avi Greengart of Current Analysis said the Windows Phone 50,000 mark is "an extremely important milestone. Consumers are understandably reluctant to invest in a platform that does not have a robust app community, but 50,000 is a reassuringly large number, so this should definitely help sales."

Greengart added that "Windows Phone also provides an arguably better, more integrated approach to the most common smartphone Relevant Products/Services tasks, and we are starting to see more innovative hardware appear for the platform." But he cautioned that "Windows Phone 7 remains far behind iOS and Android in terms of overall numbers, giving the market leaders an advantage in niche apps. Also, apps are consistently developed for iOS first, for Android second, and for Windows Phone 7...sometime later."

That makes the iPhone the "safest" choice for consumers who are driven primarily by app variety, the analyst said.

Perry: I'm the 'only outsider' (Politico)

Rick Perry made an 11th-hour plea to Iowa voters Monday, insisting he is the ?only outsider? in the Republican field while dismissing the other candidates.

?We do stand out. We?re the only outsider ? you got 63 years of collective congressional time in four of the candidates and then you?ve got a Wall Street insider,? Perry said on NBC?s ?Today? show one day before Tuesday?s Iowa caucuses, billing himself as the only candidate who can represent voters who want to clean up Washington.

The Texas governor more specifically focused his criticism on Rick Santorum, blasting the former congressman?s congressional record.

?You?ve got Rick Santorum, who?s talked about being a fiscal conservative but voted eight times to raise the debt ceiling,? Perry said. ?He?s raised it more than Obama has. He?s a serial earmarker and matter of fact, stood up as late as yesterday and said he was proud of all of the earmarks. That?s the problem in Washington.?

Perry, who came in at fifth place in the latest Des Moines Register poll, also responded to Santorum?s jab at his vow to get rid of federal agencies.

?He?s part of the problem because you?ve got a culture there ? a person who has been in Washington, D.C. so long, who doesn?t understand what the American people want,? he said. ?Why do we have a Department of Education? Does Rick Santorum want Washington to tell the people of Iowa how to educate their children? I don?t think so.?

In a later interview on MSNBC on Monday, Perry suggested that the other conservative hopefuls didn?t have enough fuel to go the distance.

?I?m the only one of the social conservatives and the fiscal conservatives that are running that actually has the ability to raise the money, to have the organization, to run through and finish the primary process. Santorum and Bachmann don?t,? he said. ?At the end of the day, we have the national organization and the fundraising capability to run through this thing. Plus, we?re the outsiders. They?re all Washington insiders.?

6:34 p.m. CST, December 30, 2011

The Cubs named former first baseman Bill Buckner as the hitting coach at Class A Boise, confirming what has been known for a week.

Buckner, who won the 1980 batting title for the Cubs and served as White Sox hitting coach in 1996-97, rejoins the Cubs after a year as manager with the independent Brockton Sox (51-42).

Buckner is an Idaho native and has owned property in the northwest. Boise plays in the Northwest League as a short-season team, beginning play on June 15.

Buckner replaces Desi Wilson, who was named the hitting coach for the Cubs' Class A Daytona team.

Ask Engadget: best live traffic standalone GPS?

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Elliot 'Mr. E' M. Smith who is trying to avoid Los Angeles rush-hour traffic with the help of his GPS. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.
"I prefer using a GPS unit, not my phone, when I'm driving around LA. The best traffic I've seen is via Google Maps, since it shows surface traffic for streets in Hollywood. Navteq HD Radio maps (which is what I use now) doesn't show this kind of information: it's only for highways. There aren't any highways between Hollywood and Beverly Hills, but there's a ton of traffic, which you're blind to when using a standalone GPS. Is there an easy way to get surface traffic data on a GPS unit rather than forking out for a phone / tablet and $30/month data plan? Thanks!"
It's a tricky one to round off the year, dear commenters. Is there a GPS unit with live-traffic that you hold dear to your hearts? Does it let you glide around the gridlock with the Beach Boys cranked up? Let your fingers do the commenting in the space below.

WHO "deeply concerned" by mutated birdflu research

LONDON | Fri Dec 30, 2011 4:43pm EST

LONDON (Reuters) - The World Health Organization issued a stern warning on Friday to scientists who have engineered a highly pathogenic form of the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus, saying their work carries significant risks and must be tightly controlled.

The United Nations health body said it was "deeply concerned about the potential negative consequences" of work by two leading flu research teams who this month said they had found ways to make H5N1 into a easily transmissable form capable of causing lethal human pandemics.

The work by the teams, one in The Netherlands and one in the United States, has already prompted an unprecedented censorship call from U.S. security advisers who fear that publishing details of the research could give potential attackers the know-how to make a bioterror weapon.

The U.S. National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity has asked two journals that want to publish the work to make only redacted versions of studies available, a request to which the journal editors and many leading scientists object.

In its first comment on the controversy, the WHO said: "While it is clear that conducting research to gain such knowledge must continue, it is also clear that certain research, and especially that which can generate more dangerous forms of the virus....has risks."

H5N1 bird flu is extremely deadly in people who are directly exposed to it from infected birds. Since the virus was first detected in 1997, about 600 people have contracted it and more than half of them have died.

But so far it has not yet naturally mutated into a form that can pass easily from person to person, although many scientists fear this kind of mutation is likely to happen at some point and will constitute a major health threat if it does.

MUTATIONS

Flu researchers around the world have been working for many years trying to figure out which mutations would give H5N1 the ability to spread easily from one person to another, while at the same time maintaining its deadly properties.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health funded the two research teams to carry out research into how the virus could become more transmissible in humans, with the aim of gaining insight on how to react if the mutation occurred naturally.

The WHO said such research should be done "only after all important public health risks and benefits have been identified" and "it is certain that the necessary protections to minimize the potential for negative consequences are in place."

The agency also said it was vital that new rules on the sharing of viruses and scientific know-how were enforced to ensure those countries at most immediate risk from H5N1, mainly developing countries in Asia such as Indonesia, Vietnam and others, would benefit from advances in research.

During the H1N1 swine flu pandemic in 2009-2010, many developing countries complained they had no life-saving antivirals or vaccines to combat the new virus, despite having made samples of the virus available to researchers and pharmaceutical companies to develop the medicines.

It is normally laboratories in wealthy developed countries that have the level of scientific expertise needed to work on complex flu viruses, while bird, or avian, flu viruses themselves often come from less well developed Asian countries.

A new Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Framework was agreed and adopted by all WHO member states in May 2011 to set rules for sharing flu viruses that have pandemic potential, and sharing the benefits of the expertise gained.

"WHO considers it critically important that scientists who undertake research with influenza viruses with pandemic potential samples fully abide by the new requirements," the U.N. agency said in its statement.
