Gingero.us: So You Have to Feed a Vegetarian, Part 2: Home Cookin'

In Part 1, we discussed what to do when you have to find a suitable vegetarian-friendly restaurant. So what do you do if you actually have to feed a vegetarian, like, right there in your own house?

So a vegetarian is coming over for dinner and all you have in the kitchen are some lunchables and the makings of a BLT. Crap. What do we do?

Don?t hyperventilate. It?ll be ok. I promise.

First, ask some questions.

As in Part 1, the first thing we need to know is what kind of vegetarian this person is. Are they a standard Ovo-lacto vegetarian, a vegan or just a Pescatarian/Flexitarian?

The next question is: What sort of dinner are we shooting for? Is this a classy, four-course sit-down thing, a holiday meal or a one-pot dinner and movie night? The degree of fancypantsness is going to factor into your food choices. Jot down a quick list of the types of dishes you need to locate so you have some guidance when you actually start looking for recipes.

A good formula to follow is: one protein + one grain + one green.

It?s worth noting that if this is a big, multi-dish meal like a holiday dinner or a pot-luck, you might not have to change a thing. At those events, I find that there are usually already enough meat-free sides for a veritable vegetarian feast. I am always appreciative when someone thinks to have some veggie burgers on hand at the barbeque, or when a friend?s family bought a Tofurky for me to have alongside the turkey at Thanksgiving. But it's rarely necessary.

Next, look at some recipes.

So let?s talk resources. There are thousands upon thousands of websites dedicated to vegetarian recipes or with large vegetarian sections. Some of the ones I frequent are Allrecipes, Vegetarian Times, VegWeb, Happy Cow, Food Network, VegKitchen, Budget Bytes, The Kitchn, and Oh She Glows (vegan). I could literally spend all day coughing up links to sites with loads of meat-free recipes.

Prepackaged meals are also an option. If you?re not a prolific cook, or if your recipe of choice calls for it, your local grocery store probably has oodles of boxes and frozen mixes for things like stir fry, chili, stews, soups and more that are vegetarian by default or can be made vegetarian. You can substitute vegetarian ?beef? crumbles in a chili recipe that calls for meat, tofu or vegetarian ?chicken? strips in a stir fry, etc.

Finally, let?s check our ingredients.

If your recipe calls for something prepackaged, or you?re buying a prepackaged meal, have a look at the ingredients list and make sure that there aren?t any non-vegetarian things lurking in there.

Protip: Don?t try to pull one over on us and assume that your vegetarian won?t know that there?s an animal product in their food. A) We might. We have lots of practice. B) That?s a dick move and just generally not nice.

If something you?re making contains ingredients that you don?t recognize (Sodium Caseinate, anyone?) a quick google search should tell you if they?re animal-derived. Happycow.net also has a great list of Animal Ingredients.

Make substitutions where necessary. Olive oil or olive oil spread can usually be substituted for butter, Agave can often be substituted for honey and almond, soy or coconut milk can usually be substituted for cow?s milk, etc. Here's a list of some common vegetarian substitutions.

The most important tip: If you're not sure, just ask your vegetarian. You know how people in other cultures are appreciative when you attempt to use their language, no matter how much you suck? Same deal. Most vegetarians will be just tickled that you?re learning to cook vegetarian food. How considerate! And if, for whatever reason, you can?t ask your vegetarian for guidance, feel free to ask me instead. I?d be glad to point you in the right direction.

Meat eaters, have you ever had to cook for a strict vegetarian? Vegetarians, how did they do? Tell me!

Cutler says Bears offense still has work to do

(AP) ? Jay Cutler's answer was short and to the point.

As explosive as the Chicago Bears' offense looked in Saturday's 33-31 preseason win over Washington, he realizes it's not quite a finished product.

How far has it come?

"Two preseason games," he said. "So that's how far we are."

The question is: How far can it go?

The Bears (tied for 11th in the AP Pro32) believe they now have the talent and depth to make a big run after injuries wrecked what was shaping up as a playoff season last year. New general manager Phil Emery addressed several areas with a flurry of moves, none bigger than the trade with Miami for Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall.

That gave Cutler a legitimate go-to target for the first time since he arrived from Denver and reunited him with his former Broncos teammate. Big things are expected, and the Bears got their first taste on Saturday.

Held out of the preseason opener against Denver following the birth of his son, Cutler wasted no time connecting with his old friend. He dropped back on Chicago's first play from scrimmage and found Marshall open deep along the right sideline after beating Cedric Griffin for a 41-yarder that drew a roar from the crowd and set the tone while helping set up the game's first touchdown.

It was exactly what the Bears envision from those two, the sort of big plays that leave the crowd in awe and the opponent on its heels. With a rifle-armed quarterback and a Pro Bowl receiver, the message to the rest of the league seemed simple: Get used to it.

They see a defense sharing the load with an offense that they believe could be explosive, and there certainly were glimpses of that on Saturday, right from the start.

That 41-yarder?

"What it does is it gets the guys on the sideline fired up, those guys like Lance (Briggs) and Brian (Urlacher) fired up, special teams fired up and we just feed off each other," said Marshall, who also turned a short pass into a 20-yard gain on that drive.

It's not just about Cutler and Marshall. It's about depth and balance.

The Bears believe they have a good mix at receiver with Earl Bennett, rookie Alshon Jeffery and Devin Hester behind Marshall to go with a balanced running attack between Pro Bowl pick Matt Forte and newcomer Michael Bush, although they didn't take many handoffs on Saturday.

Forte carried just four times for 16 yards in his preseason debut. Bush finished with 21 yards on five attempts, running it in from the 1 on the Bears' first possession and faking a defender on his 8-yard TD later in the first quarter.

"We know Michael can run it between the tackles, but I think it was good for him to show everyone that he can make you miss also," coach Lovie Smith said. "I think his second touchdown run, the guy was one-on-one in the hole, it was a great cut by him to make a guy miss. He is a big back and can do a lot of good things."

The Bears believe their offense can do a lot of good things, too. But there are some concerns on the left side of the line, particularly at the tackle spot.

J'Marcus Webb started and wound up rotating with Chris Williams until late in the game, and although there weren't any major missteps, there didn't seem to be any real answers, either. Webb seemed to hold up against Washington's Brian Orakpo until the Pro Bowl linebacker left with a shoulder injury late in the first quarter.

Another test looms Friday.

The Bears visit the New York Giants, and if they want to push Webb and Williams, that will be a good opportunity. Not only do the Giants boast one of the best defensive lines, it'll be the third preseason game. That means there will be some game-planning.

As for Saturday, Smith liked what he saw overall from the line.

"You have to, of course, go back and watch the video, things are normally not as good as you think when you have some success and things are not quite as bad too, but I think for the most part, from what I was able to see, we did a decent job," he said.

Motorola posts Android bootloader unlock page, lets just one device pass muster

Motorola posts Android bootloader unlock page, starts out small

Motorola drew fresh respect after it vowed that its Android device customers could unlock their bootloaders, starting with the Photon Q LTE. Nearly everything about that process was kept in the dark, but it's now been blown wide open: the company has posted a full page dedicated to the process. Getting started will demand the Android SDK, fastboot, new USB drivers and a slightly scary warranty release, but it otherwise goes through a very HTC-like process that provides an unlock key. Verizon subscribers who were hoping for a surprise Droid RAZR MAXX unlock won't be happy, mind you; the Photon Q LTE is the only device on the list so far that isn't already unchained as a matter of course. Motorola did characterize the unlock option as a forward-thinking option, which leaves us not so secretly wishing that high-profile future releases expand the list of unlockable devices a bit further.

Madonna adds her voice to critics of Pussy Riot verdict

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Madonna, who had already voiced her support for the Russian punk band Pussy Riot, on Saturday joined a chorus of celebrities in slamming a jail sentence handed down in Moscow to three women from the group over a protest against President Vladimir Putin.

"I protest the conviction and sentencing of Pussy Riot to a penal colony for two years for a 40-second performance extolling their political opinions," Madonna said in a statement.

The three women, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Maria Alyokhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, were convicted in a Russian court of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred for performing a "punk prayer" in Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral in which they called on the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Putin.

The two-year sentence handed down against the three women on Friday has generated outrage outside of Russia, but within the country polls have shown that few Russians sympathize with them.

Judge Marina Syrova told the Moscow court on Friday, "The girls' actions were sacrilegious, blasphemous and broke the church's rules." She rejected their argument that they had no intention of offending Russian Orthodox believers.

Madonna had previously expressed her support for the band after they were arrested.

In her latest statement, Madonna said the two-year sentence was "too harsh and in fact is inhumane."

"They've spent enough time in jail. I call on all of Russia to let Pussy Riot go free," she said.

On Friday, the European Union's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said the sentences given to the women were "disproportionate" to the crime, and European nations and the United States voiced similarly sharp criticism.

So did Canadian rock star Bryan Adams, actor Adrian Grenier and Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney, who vowed to not play a show in Russia over what he described as its move to "imprison innocent musicians for speaking their minds peacefully."

British singers Sting and Paul McCartney have also shown support for the Pussy Riot band.

Expand your Google Play library with YouTube music on your Mac

Browsing YouTube for the latest music, downloading, converting and uploading to back to Google Play is the updated version of listening to the radio, hearing a song for the first time, and adding it to your music collection directly from the radio.

When I read that the No. 1 way that teenagers are listening to music?is through the online video service YouTube, I thought they were nuts. ?Then I recalled my younger cousin?s graduation party where they had a Mac connected to a sound system playing YouTube videos to an overly energetic, makeshift dance club in the driveway. No crate of albums, no turntable or fancy disc player, not even an iPod. ?No real music collection of any kind: YouTube was the DJ. ?All I could think of was data plans, connection speeds, and the impracticality of streaming video online just to hear a tune. And to think, this is how majority of today?s teenagers are listening to music.

You Tube Music

There has to be a more practical solution. And there is: it requires a little more work up front. But it?s closer to shopping for music at the music store;?just treat YouTube as the Music Store, and not your own personal DJ. ?The goal is simple: you want to manage your own music library, while continuing to use YouTube as the primary source of discovering music. ?In fact, YouTube is taking music discovery very seriously. ?They have enhanced their music search and discovery features quite a bit over the last few months. ?Creating and subscribing to channels, sharing links to new music ? all that remains the same. ?And in the end, you can have the best of both worlds. ?By following these steps, what you and up with is your own YouTube-discovered music collection that you can take anywhere with you. ?And that you can play even when there?s no available internet connectivity nearby.

MediaHuman 'YouTube To MP3

Here?s how you do it.

The first step of the process is to get the music off of YouTube and onto your hard drive. A quick search online, and you will find plenty of YouTube-to-MP3 converters for Windows. Add ?for Mac??to the Google search string and you will be directed to?MacUpdate.com?where you will find?MediaHuman YouTube to MP3?converter. ?With MediaHuman YouTube to MP3 all you need to do is?browse?YouTube?s new Music site?with Safari and simply drag and drop the URL of the music video you want to convert into a music file on your Mac. ?You can keep it up and running within view of Safari while you surf YouTube checking out your favorite channel?s newest songs. ?There are a couple of configuration preferences you need to set up just once, like?where you want your music downloaded?and the?quality setting for the music format you prefer. ?But for the most part, it is a simple and straightforward process.

Music Brainz Picard

The problem with this technique is that the tags used to identify the music file are not complete. You will realize this when you import the music files into your favorite music player. ?The music files will have the title of the track as well as the artist, and you can enter the album if you know it a the time of the downlaod, but thats about it. If you want to complete your music collection in style, you will have to update the music file?s?ID3 tag.

To do this, you will want to use a tagging application that will update the music files for you. You will want something that can identify the songs automatically, and once identified, look up the songs? information online in order to fill in the album, artist, year, genre and other information. And?MusicBrainz Picard?does a great job of doing just that. You open your converted music files and?click the look-up button on the toolbar. Picard will then try to match the music file based off of the existing information like the title of the track, the name of the artist, and even the length of the song. ?And if that does not work, you can also ?scan? the music files using Picard?s fingerprinting capabilities. ?Picard uses an online service called AcoustID?to identify each song and perform the look-up into MusicBranz?s online database. ?Once you have located the entry in MusicBrainz database that matches the song you download and converted from YouTube, you simply save your changes. ?Now you can organize and access your music files the way you like. ?No manual editing of information, Picard will do all that for you.

Google Play Music Manager

Now that you have your music downloaded, converted and tagged, you can import the songs directly into iTunes and start using them throughout the iTunes ecosystem. An alternative would be to upload your music files to Google?s online music service Google Play. To upload your music files you will need to use the Google Play Music Manager. The upload process is quick and easy. ?Simply select the music folder you want to upload your music files from and continue. Once uploaded you can access the music files from anywhere.

IIS gMusic Player

For iOS there is an app from Interactive Innovative Solutions?called gMusic that can be used to access your Google Play music library. ?Once installed you log on with your GoogleID to access your Google Play music library. ?The best feature of gMusic is that you can download your music onto your device for playback when you are not connected to the internet.

It may seem to be a lot of steps from a lot of different companies just to get music files from Google?s YouTube online video service over to Google?s Play online music service. ?But most of the steps are automated once you have all of the tools installed and configured. ?Just imagine going to a coffee shop, using the free Wi-Fi, browsing YouTube for the latest music, downloading, converting, tagging and uploading to back to Google Play. ?Comparing days past to the present, it would be like listening to the radio, hearing a song for the first time, and adding it to your music collection directly from the radio. ?If YouTube is how you discover new music, let it be your Radio, DJ and music store all in one.

(AP) ? Frantic wives searched for missing loved ones, President Jacob Zuma rushed home from a regional summit and some miners vowed a fight to the death Friday as police announced a shocking casualty toll from the previous day's shooting by officers of striking miners: 34 dead and 78 wounded.

Wives of miners at the Lonmin platinum mine northwest of Johannesburg took the place of dead and wounded husbands on Friday in staging a protest. But this time instead of asking for higher wages as the miners had done, the women demanded to know why police had opened fire Thursday with automatic rifles, pistols and shotguns on the strikers, many of whom had been armed with spears, machetes and clubs, as they rushed toward the officers.

Police said at a news conference that it was in self-defense, noting that strikers even possessed a pistol taken from a police officer they had beaten to death on Monday. But video footage indicates the miners may have simply been trying to flee tear gas that police had fired at them moments earlier.

As the miners rushed away from a hill they had occupied and that was being tear-gassed, police opened fire, including with automatic rifles. Police were perhaps jumpy, knowing that the strikers were armed and that two officers had already died earlier in the week.

"Police stop shooting our husbands and sons," read a banner carried by the women on Friday. They kneeled before shotgun-toting police and sang a protest song, saying "What have we done?" in the Xhosa language.

National police Chief Mangwashi Victoria Phiyega told a packed news conference that Thursday was a dark day for South Africa and that it was no time for pointing fingers, even as people compared the shootings to apartheid-era state violence and political parties and labor unions demanded an investigation.

Zuma returned home from a summit in Mozambique and announced an official inquiry into the killings, which he called shocking and tragic. The president headed directly to the mine, 70 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Johannesburg, where his office said he would visit injured miners in the hospital.

At least 10 other people were killed during the week-old strike, including the two police officers battered to death by strikers and two mine security guards burned alive when strikers set their vehicle ablaze.

Makhosi Mbongane, a 32-year-old winch operator, said mine managers should have come to the striking workers rather than send police. Strikers were demanding monthly salary raises from $625 to $1,563. Mbongane vowed that he was not going back to work and would not allow anyone else to do so either.

"They can beat us, kill us and kick and trample on us with their feet, do whatever they want to do, we aren't going to go back to work," he told The Associated Press. "If they employ other people they won't be able to work either. We will stay here and kill them."

Research released by the Bench Marks Foundation, a non-governmental organization monitoring the practices of multinational mining corporations, found that Lonmin had a bad track record with high levels of fatalities and keeping workers in "very poor living conditions." According to the report released Tuesday, workers often live in deteriorating shacks without electricity. Some children suffer from chronic illnesses due to sewage spills caused by broken drainage.

The mining company said earlier that it would withhold comment on the report until the conflict situation cooled down.

Myriad problems are facing South Africa 18 years after white racist rule ended, including growing inequality between a white minority joined by a small black elite while most blacks endure high unemployment and inadequate housing, health care and education.

The shootings "awaken us to the reality of the time bomb that has stopped ticking ? it has exploded," The Sowetan newspaper said in a front-page editorial Friday. "Africans are pitted against each other... They are fighting for a bigger slice of the mineral wealth of the country."

The youth wing of the ruling African National Congress party argues that nationalization of the nation's mines and farms is the only way to redress the evils of the apartheid past. Zuma's government has played down those demands.

Lonmin PLC chairman Roger Phillimore issued a statement Friday saying the deaths were deeply regretted.

At hospitals in the area, people gathered, hoping to find missing family members among the wounded. At the scrubland scene of the killings, a woman carrying a baby on her back said she was looking for a missing miner.

"My husband left yesterday morning at 7 a.m. to come to the protest and he never came back," said Nobantu Mkhuze.

Shares in Lonmin PLC fell as much as 8 percent Friday. Since violence broke out last weekend at the Marikana mine, shares have fallen by as much as 20 percent, wiping some 390 million pounds ($610 million) off the company's market value. The company, the world's third-largest platinum miner, has also been hit by Thursday's announcement that Chief Executive Ian Farmer is hospitalized with a serious illness.

Meanwhile Friday, police investigators and forensic experts watched by about 100 people combed the scene of the shooting, planting multicolored cones and numbered placards to mark evidence amid the dirt and bushes where the shooting took place. Police also searched the rocky outcropping where thousands of miners had gathered daily to strike.

The South Africa Police Service defended officers' actions, saying in a statement that they were "viciously attacked by the (strikers), using a variety of weapons, including firearms. The police, in order to protect their own lives and in self-defense, were forced to engage the group with force."

Poor South Africans protest daily across the country for basic services like running water, housing and better health and education. Protests often turn violent, with people charging that ANC leaders have joined the white minority that continues to enrich itself while life becomes ever harder for the black majority.

The Law Society of South Africa said the miners "have been the victims of an escalating breakdown in conflict resolution, particularly in the mining industry."

"This breakdown is symptomatic of our society and body politic in South Africa," the society added.

While the initial walkout and protest focused on wages, violence has been fueled by the struggles between the dominant National Union of Mineworkers and the upstart and more radical Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union.

NUM secretary-general Frans Baleni has said that some of his union members were on a hit list, including a shop steward killed Tuesday by strikers.

Abstract

Changes in the management of cancers such as colorectal?cancer?(CRC) are urgently needed, as such cancers continue to be one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers; CRC accounts for 21% of all cancers and is responsible for mortalities second only to?lung cancer?in the United States. A comprehensive science-driven approach towards markedly improved early detection/screening to efficacious targeted therapeutics with clear diagnostic and prognostic markers is essential. In addition, further changes addressing rising costs, stemming from recent health care reform measures, will be brought about in part by changes in how care is reimbursed. For oncology, the advances in genomics and biomarkers have the potential to define subsets of patients who have a prognosis or response to a particular type of therapy that differs from the mean. Better definition of a?cancer's behavior will facilitate developing care plans tailored to the patient. One method under study is episode-based payment or bundling, where one payment is made to a provider organization to cover all expenses associated with a discrete illness episode. Payments will be based on the average cost of care, with providers taking on a risk for overutilization and outliers. For providers to thrive in this environment, they will need to know what care a patient will require and the costs of that care. A science-driven "personalized approach" to?cancer?care has the potential to produce better outcomes with reductions in the use of ineffectual therapies and costs. This promising scenario is still in the future, but progress is being made, and the shape of things to come for?cancer?care in the age of genomics is becoming clearer.

15Five Helps CEOs Stay In The Loop, Leaves Beta Testing

15five logoWhen it comes to helping CEOs and other executives stay on top of the big issues at their company, a startup called 15Five?has taken inspiration from Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard. Even though Chouinard is supposedly out of the office on outdoor adventures for several months of the year, he developed "5-15 reports"?(weekly employee memos that should take no more than 15 minutes to write and five minutes to read) to stay up-to-date. That idea has been adopted at other companies, but 15Five CEO David Hassell ?wants to make it even more widespread, by turning the 5-15 idea into a simple product for submitting, reading, and acting on weekly reports. 15Five demonstrated at the Launch conference earlier this year, and today it's coming out of beta testing.

Keeping Focused: Four Ways to Fight Distractions | Mobile Beat ...

In today?s hyper-frantic world of instant news and smartphones, plus a million other interruptions, how often do you or your team members get distracted? According to a recent study by harmon.ie, a social email software company, it may be a lot more than you think. More than half of those surveyed in businesses of all sizes across the U.S. said the longest time they can usually work without being distracted is 15 minutes, and they waste up to 60 minutes per day because of these interruptions.

And they are not alone. Just ask Dave. When he first started his company, he felt like he worked incredibly hard each day but arrived home every night exhausted and with little accomplished. So Dave decided to do something about it by telling his day what to do instead of wondering where it went. Today, he remains laser-focused and a lot more energized and relaxed, not to mention he?s become a major national brand.

So is it possible for you to be super-focused like Dave? Actually, it is. Here are a few tips how.

Set Daily Goals

Write down your goals for each day and prioritize them. Keep the list close at hand, so if you feel yourself heading toward the land of YouTube, you can grab that list to remind yourself what has to be accomplished before you walk out the door.

Limit Meetings

We?ve all been to them?those meetings that seem to last forever and never accomplish a thing. But these get-togethers don?t have to be so long. Save time by setting a time limit, insisting on an agenda, and sticking to it. If you run past the clock, simply stand up. If no one gets it, head out the door. Rude? Maybe. Effective? Absolutely.

Live by the Calendar

Meetings are not the only tasks that can be booked on your calendar. Schedule ?office time? for yourself and protect it just as you would an important meeting with an executive. It?s a great way to keep your concentration and momentum going without being interrupted.

Step Away From the Smartphone

Whether it?s the romance of that slight ping when you get an email, instant baseball scores or that Twitter feed, nothing, and we mean nothing, has more power to distract than your smartphone. So while at work, turn it off, make your assistant hold it, or throw it in the ditch. Do whatever it takes to stay away from the phone.

Dave?s friend Zig Ziglar once said, ?If you aim at nothing, you?ll hit it ever time.? And it?s true. So keep your eyes on the prize and remain super-focused, and you?ll end up a winner every time.

Prince Philip 'responding well to treatment'

Queen Elizabeth II's 91-year-old husband Prince Philip, who is in hospital with a bladder infection, is responding well to treatment, Buckingham Palace said on Thursday.

"It is unclear when he will be discharged, but he is likely to remain in hospital for a few more days," the palace added in a statement.

Philip was taken by ambulance to hospital in the Scottish city of Aberdeen on Wednesday, following a recurrence of the bladder infection that laid him low during the queen's diamond jubilee celebrations in June.

It is the prince's third health scare in the space of eight months, after he suffered a blocked coronary artery over Christmas last year which required the insertion of a stent.

He and the queen were staying at the royal family's residence at Balmoral in northeast Scotland when he was taken ill and driven to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, about 40 miles (60 kilometres) away.

Buckingham Palace said on Wednesday that he was hospitalised as a "precautionary measure".

Philip, whose official title is the Duke of Edinburgh, had appeared in good health on Monday as he carried out public engagements on the Isle of Wight, off southern England.

He had also attended several events at the London Olympics over the past two weeks, and appeared delighted as he watched his granddaughter Zara Phillips, who went on to win a silver medal in the equestrian events.

But age has begun to take its toll. The prince spent five nights in hospital with a bladder infection in June, forcing him to miss the end of the huge diamond jubilee celebrations marking the queen's 60th year on the throne.

The infection came after he spent several hours standing on a royal barge in heavy rain as part of a jubilee pageant on the River Thames.

On the night he was taken ill, hundreds of thousands of revellers chanted his name to wish him well at a star-studded jubilee concert outside Buckingham Palace.

A few days before Christmas he was flown by helicopter to hospital for surgery on a blocked coronary artery after suffering chest pains.

Greek-born Philip is the longest-serving royal consort in British history, and has been the queen's stalwart companion throughout her reign.

He is famous for his politically incorrect jokes, but behind the scenes is said to be a key source of support for the queen.

"He has been a constant strength and guide," the 86-year-old monarch told parliament in March.

Born Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark, Philip fled Greece with his family when he was just 18 months old as the country was seized by political instability.

An officer in Britain's Royal Navy during World War II, he had met Princess Elizabeth in 1939, but the couple did not marry until 1947.

He had to give up his Greek and Danish titles and join the Church of England in order to marry the future queen, and his career was cut short by the death of king George VI in 1952, which brought Elizabeth to the throne.

He once admitted the curtailment of his promising naval career was "disappointing", but said that "being married to the queen, it seemed to me that my first duty was to serve her in the best way I could".

They have four children. The eldest is heir to the throne Prince Charles.

Up to 25 Shiites killed in Pakistan bus attack

By Mushtaq Yusufzai, NBC News

ISLAMABAD ? Up to 25 Shiites were dragged from passenger buses and killed early Thursday in a suspected sectarian attack, police and government officials said.

The victims were ordered off three buses by unknown gunmen and then shot dead, according to a senior government official.

There have been several such sectarian attacks in the region in the past, including one earlier this year in which 25 Shiites were killed.

Thursday's attack took place in the remote mountainous Lalusar area of Naran valley in northern Pakistan.

A senior police official said three buses taking passengers from Rawalpindi, near the capital Islamabad, to the Astore district of northern Pakistan, were attack early in the morning.

Commissioner Hazara division Khalid Umarzai said 18-25 people are suspected to have been killed.

"According to our information, around 15 armed men who were wearing Pakistan army uniform stopped the buses," Umarzai said. "They disembarked all the passengers and checked their identity cards and then opened fire at them. But this is initial information and death toll could rise as the area is far away and it will take some time in reaching complete information to us."

He said a group of foreign visitors, including a party of Japanese travelers, informed them about the incident.

Police official Shah Nawaz said most of the people traveling in buses were from Shiite Muslim community.?He said they were using the Kaghan-Naran route because of previous attacks on the Karakurram highway.

Air base attack
Earlier, militants attacked a military air base in Pakistan, prompting a five-hour firefight that killed two security guards and six attackers and left the base commander seriously injured.

The militants, wearing military uniforms and suicide vests, entered the Kamra airbase, close to the capital, Islamabad.

Images of daily life, political pursuits, religious rites and deadly violence.

A Pakistan Air Force spokesman said the militants attacked the air base where JF-17 Thunder planes are assembled. However, the spokesman said those aircraft were not present at the airbase during the attack.

Security officials inside the base said some security personnel have been injured in exchange of fire with the militants.

No militant group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack but Pakistani security officials believed the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP headed by Hakimullah Mahsud could be behind the attack.

Pakistani intelligence agencies had released reports a few days ago and said that militants could attack PAF and other military installations during the final week of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month.

Asia stocks up as traders look ahead to US data

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets edged higher Tuesday, after a successful bond auction in Italy and signs that Greece's recession might be easing quelled fears that the eurozone debt crisis might spiral out of control.

Greece said Monday that the country's deep recession had eased slightly, although the economy still contracted 6.2 percent in the second quarter from the same period last year. In the first quarter, the contraction was 6.5 percent.

Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Melbourne said in an email commentary that "the pace of Greece's economic meltdown was not quite as steep as the few economists who try to forecast the data expected."

Greece is being kept solvent by international bailout loans, granted in return for a harsh austerity program.

Investors also cheered a successful bond action Monday in which Italy raised $9.9 billion, although the rates it had to pay investors rose slightly.

Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 0.5 percent to 8,931, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.3 percent to 20,138.26. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.8 percent to 1,948.26. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.2 percent to 4,293.10.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and New Zealand also rose, while mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index and Shenzhen Composite Index were both lower.

Traders were waiting for the release of retail sales data from the U.S. for a clearer temperature reading of the health of the world's biggest economy. Other U.S. economic data this week includes July industrial production figures.

Wall Street stocks closed mostly lower Tuesday. The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 0.3 percent at 13,169.43. The Standard & Poor's 500 index declined 0.1 percent to 1,404.11, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.1 percent to 3,022.52.

Benchmark oil for September delivery rose 13 cents to $92.86 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 14 cents to finish at $92.73 per barrel in New York on Tuesday.

In currency trading, the euro rose to $1.2342 from $1.2336 late Tuesday in New York. The dollar fell to 78.35 yen from 78.43 yen.

Trayvon Martin killer makes another appeal for a new judge

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - The lawyer for George Zimmerman, who is charged in the shooting death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin, filed an appeal on Monday in a renewed attempt to seek a new judge in the case.

Mark O'Mara told reporters he asked a Florida appeals court to reconsider a ruling by Judge Kenneth Lester refusing to step down from the case.

In a motion filed last month, O'Mara claimed Lester made "gratuitous" and "disparaging remarks" about Zimmerman and showed bias in a July 5 ruling that raised Zimmerman's bond from $150,000 to $1 million.

The bond increase came after prosecutors presented evidence Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie, misled the judge about their finances. Shellie Zimmerman was later charged with perjury.

Zimmerman, 28, has pleaded not guiltily to second-degree murder in the February 26 shooting death of Martin. The teen was unarmed and walking back from a store when Zimmerman called a 911 dispatcher and said Martin looked suspicious.

Zimmerman said he shot Martin in self defense after he was attacked and Martin repeatedly slammed his head to the ground.

He is free on a $1 million bond and living in an undisclosed safe house near the central Florida city of Sanford awaiting trial.

"He really has to live as a hermit," said O'Mara. "He's not doing well. He's getting by."

O'Mara also said contributions to Zimmerman's legal defense fund have slowed.

O'Mara said the fund holds $50,000 to $60,000 and that $20,000 of the total is committed to outstanding bills. Neither of the Zimmermans is working or looking for jobs, he added.

"I don't think that he can be in public and, consequently, I don't think that she can be in public because there is a lot of hatred and animosity focused on them and you don't know when it might show up," O'Mara said.

Girls with ADHD more prone to self-injury, suicide as they enter adulthood

ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) ? Girls with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) -- and their families -- often look forward to the likely decline in visible symptoms such as fidgety or disruptive behavior as they mature into young women.

However, new findings from UC Berkeley caution that, as they enter adulthood, girls with histories of ADHD are more prone to internalize their struggles and feelings of failure -- a development that can manifest itself in self-injury and even attempted suicide.

"Like boys with ADHD, girls continue to have problems with academic achievement and relationships, and need special services as they enter early adulthood," said Stephen Hinshaw, UC Berkeley professor of psychology and lead author of a study that reports after 10 years on the largest-ever sample of girls whose ADHD was first diagnosed in childhood.

"Our findings of extremely high rates of cutting and other forms of self-injury, along with suicide attempts, show us that the long-term consequences of ADHD females are profound," he added.

The study is published August 14 in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. Its results are consistent with earlier findings by the UC Berkeley team that, as girls with ADHD grow older, they show fewer visible symptoms of the disorder, but continue to suffer in hidden ways. The findings challenge assumptions that girls can "outgrow" ADHD, and underscore the need for long-term monitoring and treatment of the disorder, Hinshaw said.

The longitudinal study, which began when the girls were ages 6 to 12, is funded by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health. Since 1997, Hinshaw and his team have tracked a racially and socio-economically diverse group of girls with ADHD in the San Francisco Bay Area through early childhood summer camps, adolescence and now early adulthood. In addition to this new study, many others have been published by the team about the girls every five years.

In the United States, more than 5 million children ages 3-17 -- approximately one in 11 -- have been diagnosed with ADHD, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ADHD is characterized by poor concentration, distractibility, hyperactivity, impulsiveness and other symptoms that are inappropriate for the child's age. Evidence-based treatment includes stimulant medications and various forms of behavior therapy.

The new UC Berkeley study, assessing the girls 10 years after it began, examined 140 of them, ages 17-24, comparing their behavioral, emotional and academic development to that of a demographically similar group of 88 girls without ADHD. It also gauged the symptoms of two major ADHD subtypes: Those who entered the study with poor attention alone versus those who had a combination of inattention plus high rates of hyperactivity and impulsivity.

The study's major finding was that the group with combined inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity during childhood was by far the most likely to manifest self-injury and suicide attempts in early adulthood. In fact, the study pointed out, more than half of the members of this subgroup were reported to have engaged in self-injurious behavior, and more than one-fifth had attempted suicide, Hinshaw said.

"A key question is why, by young adulthood, young women with ADHD would show a markedly high risk for self-harm ? Impulse control problems appear to be a central factor," the study said.

In the first study on this group, published in 2002, the 6- to- 12-year old girls attended five-week camps where they were closely monitored as they partook in art and drama classes and outdoor activities. Those taking ADHD medication volunteered to go off the drug treatment for much of the summer camp study. The counselors and staff observing all the participants did not know which of them had been diagnosed with ADHD.

That study found that girls with ADHD were more likely to struggle academically and to be rejected by their peers, compared to the comparison peer group. The five-year follow-up study, when the girls were 12 to 17 and experiencing early to mid-adolescence, found that the fidgety and impulsive symptoms tended to subside in the early teen years, but that the learning gap between girls with ADHD and their non-ADHD peers had widened, and eating disorders and substance abuse had surfaced.

For the latest study, in which 95 percent of the original sample of girls participated, the researchers conducted intensive interviews with the subjects and their families. Those interviews include personal reports on behaviors such as self-harm and suicide attempts, drug use, eating habits and driving behavior.

Researchers also measured key cognitive functions such as executive planning skills, which include goal-setting and monitoring, planning and keeping on task despite distractions.

While many girls in the study showed improvement in ADHD symptoms during the 10-year period, certain problems persisted and new ones emerged, suggesting that careful monitoring and treatment are essential, Hinshaw said.

"The overarching conclusion is that ADHD in girls portends continuing problems, through early adulthood," the study concluded. "Our findings argue for the clinical impact of ADHD in female samples, the public health importance of this condition on girls and women, and the need for ongoing examination of underlying mechanisms, especially regarding the high risk of self-harm in young adulthood."

That said, Hinshaw added, "ADHD is a treatable condition, as long as interventions are monitored carefully and pursued over a number of years."

In addition to Hinshaw, authors and researchers of the study are Elizabeth Owens, Christine Zalecki, Emily Schrodek and Erika Swanson at UC Berkeley; Suzanne Perrigue Huggins at the University of Maryland and Adriana Montenegro-Nevado at Palo Alto University.

Comeback Kumar into Olympic wrestling final

India's Sushil Kumar advanced into the Olympic men's 66kg freestyle wrestling final after coming from behind in his last four clash in spectacular style on Sunday.

Victory means the 29-year-old, world champion in 2010, is guaranteed to improve on the bronze medal he won at the Beijing Games four years ago.

Having won the first period against Akzhurek Tanatarov of Kazakhstan, Kumar saw his semi-final opponent level and then go 3-0 ahead in the third and final period.

But Kumar countered with a hold down initially worth two points, which he converted into a three-point score to tie the match. And with 34 seconds left he'd edged 5-3 in front.

Then, with just seconds of the contest remaining, Kumar sealed victory with a huge throw that saw him dump Tanatarov onto the mat.

Now he will face Japan's Tatsuhiro Yonemistu in the final later Sunday.

Kumar had a tough start to his London 2012 campaign, beating 2008 gold medallist Ramazan Sahin of Turkey 3-1.

There are no seedings in Olympic wrestling and the luck of the draw saw Kumar paired against fellow former world champion Sahin in the last 16.

In his quarter-final bout, Kumar overcame Uzbekistan's Ikhtiyor Navruzov, also by a 3-1 margin, after surviving a spirited rally by his opponent with some quick counters and strong lifts.

Kumar, who carried India's flag at the opening ceremony, is now assured of giving his country their second freestyle wrestling medal of this Games after Yogeshwar Dutt won 60kg bronze on Saturday.

Treasurys barely budge on signs of Asia slowdown

NEW YORK (AP) ? Treasurys barely budged as investors considered more signs of an economic slowdown from Asia.

Japan's economy grew at a slower-than-expected annualized rate of 1.4 percent in the April-June period. The news follows last week's report from China that trade and domestic demand had weakened faster than expected. These new reports are adding to worries over the global economic outlook.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note didn't change, and its yield remained unchanged from Friday at 1.66 percent.

The 30-year bond's yield rose slightly to 2.75 percent, from 2.74 percent. Its price fell 3 cents for $100 invested.

The yield on the two-year Treasury note remained unchanged at 0.26 percent. The yield on the three-month Treasury bill remained unchanged at 0.10 percent.
