Samsung's Plan To Ditch Google And Apple - Business Insider

Samsung is expected to release a smartphone on a new operating system called Tizen in 2013.

It's a bold move that could let Samsung lessen its dependence on Apple, a major customer for parts that has nonetheless sued it for patent infringement, and Google, which makes the Android software has been a big part of Samsung's smartphone success but now competes with Samsung through its Motorola acquisition.

Tizen is similar to Android in that it's an open-source smartphone OS built from Linux. But with one big exception, it's not controlled by Google.

Instead it's backed by Intel, Samsung, and NTT DoCoMo, Japan's largest mobile communication company. It arose from the ashes of another effort to come up with an Android alternative, known as MeeGo. MeeGo was championed by Intel and Nokia before Nokia cast it aside in favor of its Windows Phone partnership with Microsoft.

So Intel tried again and found a partner with Samsung. Samsung is in a similar bind to Nokia, which was looking to replacing its aging phone software, Symbian. Samsung wants to phase out its homegrown smartphone platform, Bada, and replace it with Tizen.

There was some talk that the first Tizen phone would arrive in 2012, but last summer, Samsung pushed back its plans to focus on Android and Windows, CMS Arena reported, It looked like Tizen would die a similar death to MeeGo.

Not so, reports Japan's?Yomiuri Shimbun, a daily?newspaper. Samsung will move ahead with Tizen smartphones next year with DoCoMo for release in Japan. Details were scant as to whether Samsung will have Tizen phones available in other countries, but that seems likely.

Obviously, even if Tizen phones are sold in the U.S., they won't be a popular alternative to Apple's iPhone, Google's Android, or Windows Phone until there are lots of Tizen apps in an app store.

But Tizen is a project that is officially sponsored by the Linux Foundation, an organization that has 800 companies and 8,000 dedicated developers?on tap. And Samsung seems serious enough about Tizen to get it off the ground.

Last summer, the Korean company plunked out $500,000 to up its membership in the Linux Foundation to the highest level, Platinum, which gives Samsung a seat on the Linux Foundation's board.

Getting Your Personal Finance In Order - ProjectPB ? The ProjectPB ...

Do you want to change your financial future from here on out? This task is possible, but it takes some work, as well as some research. Luckily, this article will give you tips to send you on the proper path.

The most important part of accumulating wealth is to always spend less than you make. People who do not have a budget or who earn less than they spend, will only end up deeper in debt. Take stock of how much money comes into the household, and make sure the amount you spend is less.

A program you can enroll into if you?re traveling by air a lot is a frequent flier mile program. There are many credit cards that offer rewards for purchases that you can use to get discounted or even free air fare. Miles can add up quickly and then be redeemed at hotels for discounted rates, or even free rooms.

TIP! Having an account for rainy days is a wise way to prepare for emergencies. You should also put money away for long term spending goals like college tuition, or a relaxing vacation.

Establishing scheduled transfers from your primary account to your savings account is an excellent way to jump-start your saving efforts. This can be a great way to save money. In the event you are saving money for something special (e.g. a vacation or wedding) this can be very helpful.

Include putting money into savings as an important component of your personal financial program. A savings account is a great place to store money for buying a major appliance or to take a vacation. Consider putting retirement money away! If your expenses are less than your income, you should be able to save money every month.

Keep up with world money markets so you know what is happening. Instead of ignoring global news, you should pay attention when trading currency. Keeping up on developments in world finance can help you tailor your own financial strategy to respond to the current economic climate.

Use a wall calender to track your monthly payments, and write down all bill due dates. This way, you will still make all of your payments on time, even if you do not receive an actual paper bill in the mail. This will allow you to budget more easily and allow you to stay away from late fees.

There are plenty of free checking accounts, go for that option. Credit unions and local banks are a good place to start looking.

Tax planning strategies can improve the personal financial situation of most everyone. Think about opportunities for investments that your employer provides for investing your pre-tax income into qualified plans. Put some pre-tax earnings into a fund for medical bills. Take advantage of all the 401K matching programs and workplace programs that your company offers you. Try your best to make the most of your money.

Learn from your past financial mistakes. Learn from those mistakes and the trouble it caused you. To avoid the same thing from happening, do not get yourself in the same financial mess again. If you have sold your time for far less than its value in the past, vow never to do it again as you move forward. When you are dealing with your personal finances, any mistake that has been made can be turned into a valuable learning experience. Make sure to learn from your lessons, so you will not be in a poor financial situation in time to come.

Get your finances back on track by creating and sticking to a budget. You need to have a budget to help you change the way you spend your money. It can also help curb unnecessary spending.

TIP! If you have any debts, make sure to pay them down when you get any income tax refunds. It is common for many to immediately spend tax refunds on new items rather than using them to repay old balances.

Your perception on how you view finances should have changed by now. The tips you?ve read will be able to guide you towards financial stability. Now, just stay motivated and do not allow anything to bring you down.

10 Winter Depression Busters for Seasonal Affective Disorder ...

10 Winter Depression Busters for Seasonal Affective DisorderWe?ve officially entered the hard months, the ?dark ages? as the midshipmen at the Naval Academy say: the time of the year when the sun disappears and the pale complexions of your friends remind you that you had better take your vitamins or else you?ll have a cold to go with your pasty look.

I dread winter each year because many of my depression busters require sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s. What does a girl who kayaks and bikes for sanity do in the winter? Lots of things.

Here are a few of them.

1. Give back.

Ghandi once wrote that ?the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.? Positive psychologists like University of Pennsylvania?s Martin Seligman and Dan Baker, Ph.D., director of the Life Enhancement Program at Canyon Ranch, believe that a sense of purpose ? committing oneself to a noble mission ? and acts of altruism are strong antidotes to depression.

The winter months are a good time to do this because the need is greater, the holiday spirit ideally lasts until February, and you don?t have the excuse of attending family picnics, unless you live in California or Florida.

2. Join the gym.

Don?t let the cold weather be an excuse not to sweat. We have centers today called ?gyms? where people exercise inside! Granted, it?s not the same ? watching the news or listening to the soundtrack from ?Rocky? as you run in place as opposed to jogging along wooded paths with a view of the bay. But you accomplish the goal: a heart rate over 140 beats a minute.

The gym is also a kind of support group for me. These women, I?m guessing, are going after the endorphin buzz just like me because alcohol and recreational drugs don?t do the trick anymore. And, like moi, I suspect that they also have great difficulty meditating. Every time they close their eyes, they have visions of screaming kids, Chuck E. Cheese hell, and the crisis of no thank-you gifts for teachers.

3. Use a light lamp.

Bright-light therapy ? involving sitting in front of a fluorescent light box that delivers an intensity of 10,000 lux ? can be as effect as antidepressant medication for mild and moderate depression and can yield substantial relief for Seasonal Affective Disorder.
I usually turn on my mammoth HappyLite in November, just after my least favorite day of the year: when Daylight Saving Time ends and we ?fall back? an hour, which means that I have about an hour of sunlight to enjoy after I pick up the kids from school.

4. Wear bright colors.

I have no research supporting this theory, but I?m quite convinced there is a link between feeling optimistic and sporting bright colors. It?s in line with ?faking it ?til you make it,? desperate attempts to trick your brain into thinking that it?s sunny and beautiful outside?time to celebrate Spring!?even though it?s a blizzard with sleet causing some major traffic jams.

Personally, I tend to wear black everyday in the winter. It?s supposed to make you look thinner. But the result is that I appear as if and feel like I?m going to a funeral every afternoon between the months of November and March. This isn?t good. Not for a person hardwired to stress and worry and get depressed when it?s cold. So I make a conscious effort to wear bright green, purple, blue, and pink, and sometimes ? if I?m in a rush ? all of them together!

5. Force yourself outside.

I realize that the last thing you want to do when it?s 20 degrees outside and the roads are slushy is to head outside for a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood. It?s much more fun to cuddle up with a good novel or make chocolate chip cookies and enjoy them with a hot cup of Jo.

On many winter days ? especially in late January and early February when my brain is done with the darkness?I have to literally force myself outside, however brief. Because even on cloudy and overcast days, your mood can benefit from exposure to sunlight. Midday light, especially, provides Vitamin D to help boost your limbic system, the emotional center of the brain. And there is something so healing about connecting with nature, even if it?s covered in snow.

6. Hang out with friends.

This seems like an obvious depression buster. Of course you get together with your buddies when your mood starts to go south. But that?s exactly when many of us tend to isolate. I believe that it takes a village to keep a person sane and happy. That?s why we need so many support groups today. People need to be validated and encouraged and inspired by persons on the same journey.

And with all the technology today, folks don?t even have to throw on their slippers to get to a support group. Online communities provide a village of friendship right at your computer. Every day I read comments like this one from Beyond Blue member Margaret: ?Membership in this club to which we all unwillingly belong isn?t something I would wish on anyone; nonetheless, reading how others have survived specific circumstances has given me hope where I?d lost sight of it and inspired me to keep on keepin? on even when my feet feel as if they?re encased in buckets of cement and will pull me under the stagnant water in the bottom of the pit.?

7. Head south.

Granted, this solution isn?t free, especially if you live in Maine. But you need not travel like the Kennedys to transplant your body and mind to a sunny spot for a few days. I try to schedule our yearly vacation the last week of January or the first week of February so that it breaks up the winter and so that I have something to look forward to in those depressing weeks following the holidays.

8. Challenge yourself: Take up a project.

There?s no time like winter to start a home project, like de-cluttering the house or purging all the old clothes in your kids? closets. When a friend of mine was going through a tough time, she painted her entire house?every room downstairs with two different colors. And it looked professional! Not only did it help distract her from her problems, but it provided her with a sense of accomplishment that she desperately needed those months, something to feel good about as she saw other things crumble around her. Projects like organizing bookshelves, shredding old tax returns, and cleaning out the garage are perfect activities for the dreary months of the year. And hey, most of them are free!

My mood can often be lifted by meeting a new challenge ? an activity that is formidable enough to keep my attention, but easy enough to do when my brain is muddied. Learning how to record and edit video blogs, for this girl who hates technology, turned out to be great fun. Friends of mine get the same boost by joining Jenny Craig and losing the 25 pounds of baby fat, or exploring a new hobby ? like scrapbooking. I try to stretch myself in a small way every winter ? whether it be taking a writing class, researching the genetics of mood disorders, or something similar. It keeps my brain from freezing, like the rest of my body.

9. Watch the sugar.

I think our body gets the cue just before Thanksgiving that it will be hibernating for a few months, so it needs to ingest everything edible in sight. And I?m convinced the snow somehow communicates to the human brain the need to consume every kind of chocolate available in the house. We are mammals, yes, so do we think we need an extra layer of fat in the winter to keep us warm? I?m starting to think so.

Depressives and addicts need to be especially careful with sweets because the addiction to sugar and white-flour products is very real and physiological, affecting the same biochemical systems in your body as other drugs like heroin. According to Kathleen DesMaisons, author of ?Potatoes Not Prozac?: Your relationship to sweet things is operating on a cellular level. It is more powerful than you have realized? What you eat can have a huge effect on how you feel.?

10. Stock up on Omega-3?s.

During the winter I?m religious about stocking in my medicine cabinet a Noah?s Ark supply of Omega-3 capsules because leading physicians at Harvard Medical School confirmed the positive effects of this natural, anti-inflammatory molecule on emotional health. I treat my brain like royalty ? hoping that it will be kind to me in return ? so I fork over about $30 a month for the Mac Daddy of the Omega-3s, capsules that contain 70 percent EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid). One 500mg softgel capsule meets the doctor-formulated 7:1 EPA to DHA ratio, needed to elevate and stabilize mood.

Tory Zellick: Mom On Trial

Sometimes, to be a good caregiver, we have to put our own needs and opinions aside, so as to support our loved one in making their own choice about their own life. Take the example of my mom deciding to participate in a clinical trial: Three years into her battle with breast cancer, the cancer metastasized to her bones. Initially my mom tried chemotherapy, but it significantly compromised her quality of life; so she decided instead to go with alternative medicine.

I was all for that decision.

My mom subsequently outlived her predicted "death date" by one and a half years. In addition, she was doing quite well and feeling relatively pain-free. In my opinion, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. When a new chemotherapy option was offered as part of a clinical trial, however, my mom jumped at the chance to participate. Somehow, she felt convinced that this chemotherapy option was her one chance, her final shot, of maybe making it out of cancer alive. If she did not survive the trial, she reasoned, perhaps someone else a decade later would survive, in part because of her participation in the trial.

While I disagreed with my mom's decision, it was hers to make. Everyone in the family had voiced their respective opinions, and at the end of the day, it was my mom's life. So as my mom's caregiver, I ultimately supported the participation in the trial, albeit reluctantly. The thing is, we knew very little about the trial and even less about how to assess what we did know about it; so we were poorly informed about it and unprepared for the impact it would have on our lives.

On the day that my mom was to be evaluated for participation in the trial, I drove us three hours into the city, to the clinical trial facility. Unsure of what questions to ask, and feeling overwhelmed, I simply watched as a nurse practitioner, research oncologist and trial facilitator flipped through years of medical records and asked my mom questions. After a final examination, the team decided that my mom could participate in the trial, and they advised us of the protocols:

1. My mom would have an exam once every three weeks, at the clinical trial facility.

2. One hour before each exam, my mom would have blood drawn in the laboratory near that facility.

3. Every six weeks, my mom would have a nuclear bone scan and CAT scan -- one requiring a radioactive tracer injection and the other requiring fasting and drinking an orange-colored contrast liquid.

4. My mom would take the trial medication daily, along with another medication that had been FDA-approved. Aside from these two medications, my mom would not be able to take anything else -- over-the-counter, herbal or prescribed -- without the prior consent of the medical team.

Looking back, I can see the warning signs of how demanding this trial would be on my mom, not to mention on myself; but at the time, the protocol seemed simple enough. What I did not take into consideration, or have the foresight to ask, was the following:

1. What days and times were appointments available, and how long would each appointment take?

2. Would my mom be able to handle the six-hour, round-trip commutes in the car, considering that she had cancer in her spine?

3. Who would pay for the tests every six weeks, and where would they be located?

As it turned out, exam appointments were only on Tuesdays, in the middle of the work week -- leaving me, and me alone, to drive my mom. While these appointments theoretically took just half an hour each, it was only if the lab had the blood work done in time for the scheduled appointment and if the trial clinic team was on time. In reality, the appointments took up to several hours. In addition, if we scheduled late-morning appointments, we could leave the city in time to avoid rush-hour traffic on the way home, but it meant driving out to the city shortly after dawn. If the appointments ran behind, we had to stay in the city until the evening and arrive home late at night, to avoid sitting in traffic.

These trips created a pressure-cooker environment for my mom and me, adding stress to an already-strained relationship with its underlying power struggle: She was the mother, and I was the daughter; but for the sake of her wellbeing, the roles were often reversed. In this case, I was responsible for making sure my mom woke up, did her morning rituals, ate breakfast, and got in the car in time to make it to the clinical trial appointments. My mom's short-term memory was nil, and she often acted like a child -- wanting to stop at a caf? for tea or get a grilled cheese sandwich along the way, when doing so would compromise our ability to get to our destination on schedule.

That said, my mom always held her head high and never complained about the commute. For me, however, every third Tuesday was torture. For starters, nobody wants to spend six hours on the road, except maybe a truck driver. In addition, I was essentially taxiing a porcelain doll, which left me riddled with anxiety about a potential fender-bender in the city. I was, after all, from a small town with two lanes of traffic total, not five in each direction. Then there were all the what-ifs: What if we arrived late to the appointment and could not get in? What if the test results did not make it to the clinical trial office in time for the appointment - making our drive for naught? What if test results found something I did not want to know, like evidence that the disease was spreading?

Fortunately, our insurance covered the cost of the bone and CAT scans, and my mom was able to get them done locally. Each test, however, was at a different facility. In addition, for whatever reason, my mom always wanted to do both tests on the same day -- which meant fasting all evening, waking up, drinking orange contrast liquid for the CAT scan, driving to hospital and receiving the radioactive tracer, driving to the imaging center and getting the CAT scan, then driving back to hospital for the bone scan. When all was said and done, it was time to eat, but by then, my mom was exhausted and wanted nothing to do with food.

After almost a year on the new chemotherapy, the clinical trial team decided it was not working for my mom in the way they had anticipated. The team advised my mom to stop the chemo immediately, then reconvene with the research oncologist in two months, to discuss other treatment options. Sadly, my mom passed away before the consult date. Still, she never regretted participating in the trial, knowing that others like her could benefit in the future.

By supporting other caregivers through the process of looking after their loved ones, I strive to continue in my mom's footsteps -- honoring and continuing her quest to help out. For this reason, I created The Medical Day Planner - hoping to ease the journey of those in the caregiving role today. Also for this reason, I have been busy interviewing pharmaceutical corporations, university research facilities, clinical trial associations and caregiving organizations, so as to guide caregivers on how to optimize the clinical trial experience for all parties involved. Stay tuned for upcoming articles on this topic -- including how to find clinical trials for various illnesses, what questions to ask clinical trial facilitators, how to do a cost-benefit analysis of a given trial, how to organize information related to a trial and how to support a loved one through the process of a trial.

Meanwhile, Mom, wherever you are, I hope that you are proud of me.

Eric Garcetti for Mayor of Los Angeles

To our Californian readers, and friends of progressive candidates everywhere: Eric Garcetti is the current frontrunner for Mayor of Los Angeles ? by a whisker, and only according to some polls: this is a very close race ? and is a true blue progressive. I have known him for almost 30 years and can testify that he is exactly the kind of reality-based politician BMGers want to run the second largest city in the land: President of the LA City Council from 2001-2012, dedicated to the causes we hold dear in both word and deed, a Rhodes Scholar, his qualifications are almost endless.

Junior Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez: The Rematch Will Outdo the First Fight

The rematch between Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez will go down in the main event of UFC 155.? It may be one of the most talked-about rematches in recent memory, given how their first meeting ended.

Velasquez and dos Santos met one another on the first-ever UFC card on the Fox network in Nov. of 2011. After a 30-minute pre-match lead-in, fans were hoping for an epic battle between two of the best heavyweights on the planet.

Instead, the end came swiftly, just 64 seconds into the contest.

Velasquez didn't quite look like himself, and the knee injury he had coming in likely played some part in his performance. But he also looked very tentative as well, something we hadn't seen from a guy who likes to push the pace, given his conditioning advantage over most heavyweights.

Dos Santos, to his own credit, fought with a damaged knee as well. He was able to land an overhand right to end the fight and capitalize on the opening for the finish.

Now both men will meet one another Saturday night to decide the future of the heavyweight division. Will the rematch play out in similar fashion?

Luckily, there's hope for a better fight the second time around.

For one, just as in team sports, it's very hard to dominate an opponent a second time. Both men have learned what to do and what not to do coming into the rematch. Training for months on end for the same opponent no doubt makes each man an expert on the other.

Another reason the rematch should outdo the first is Velasquez.

The former champion seems to have a different mindset coming into the rematch. Listening to him in the pre-fight interviews, Velasquez seems to realize he needs to be more aggressive and not wait for the champion to make the first move. As a popular saying in professional wrestling goes, "The challenger needs to beat the champion, a champion doesn't need to beat his challenger."

Velasquez knows he needs to come out and take the title from dos Santos, which should lead to some explosive striking exchanges. Or even better, Velasquez may get a takedown and make the champion fight off his back, something we've yet to see from dos Santos thus far in his UFC career.

With so many variables coming in, the rematch is bound to create just as much?if not more?anticipation for how the fight will play out. And, of course, greater anticipation creates greater interest in the fight.

It's very rare that a rematch ends in similar fashion as the first meeting, but given JDS' punching power, that could be a real possibility. Still, Velasquez seems to be focused on getting his belt back and won't go down without a fight this time.

With Portrait Photography To Make Moments Last Forever ? Arts and ...

Speaking of portrait photography, it refers to the photographing of a person capturing his or her features, expressions, moods and to a certain extent the surroundings. The focus of a portrait is essentially on the face of the subject. Family portrait photography is what is generally referred to as a ?family photograph? where various family members are captured in different poses and settings.

The availability of affordable point and shoot digital cameras has ensured that every family is now able to capture their ?special? moments for posterity on their own but a trawl through the social networking sites or through some online albums will tell you how wrong amateur photographs can get even with the best of technology. You can read on to know more.

Professionals who specialize in the area of portrait photography are an assurance that the photographs for which they have been assigned will be exactly what you want. After all, portrait photographs are commissioned to mark special milestones in people?s lives such as baptism, the first birthday, beginning of school and of course graduation followed by other big days such as engagement, promotions and then retirement. These are all special moments to be cherished, treasured, shared and relived for a long time and the only way of doing this is through photographs.

Of course, you do have video filming, but let?s be honest, how many of us go back to the video recordings of the landmark moments of our lives? We prefer looking at the photographs, don?t we? Portraits of the older members of the family acquire a special significance and sentimental value when they are no longer with us and serve as reminders of the love and guidance that they provided in their lifetimes, hence it is important to have an experienced photographer take care of these important photos. Find a professional portrait photographer to meet your needs.

To continue in the same vein, whenever we have a family photograph taken by someone in the family, we usually notice a lot of flaws not to mention the missing family member who was behind the camera at the moment. Family gatherings are very special and emotional occasions which allow for a lot of beautiful moments to be captured on film. Once again, only a professional with experience in Family Portrait Photography can do justice to them. ?Posed? and ?Natural? moments are blended together by a professional photographer through adept handling of the camera and lighting to create an evocative set of family photos to shared and framed and put up at home to be admired by relatives and friends. And as an added bonus, every member of the family gets to be in the picture!

Pacific gets insurance, puts dissolution or annexation on hold ...

The City of Pacific got a last minute reprieve on Wednesday with the City Council voting to accept an offer of insurance coverage for 2013.

The new policy will provide about half the coverage of the new insurance and cost more money, but it will stave off the possibility of the city having to annex into Auburn or cease to exist.

"You need liability insurance to operate the city, the employees need to have some sort of liability coverage, coverage on all the vehicles, coverage for anyone that may get hurt," Council President Leanne Guier told King 5 News.

The city was informed in July that it's previous policy with the Cities Insurance Association of Washington would be cancelled on Dec. 31 if "swift, concrete and verifiable deeds to bring a more stable and professional environment to the City of Pacific" were not made.

At the time of the notice the city was without any major department heads, all of whom had either resigned or been fired by controversial Mayor Cy Sun.

Although the city began to fill vacancies after Sun was ordered by a Pierce County Superior Court judge to hire new personnel, a plea to the CIAW to extend coverage for Pacific was denied.

Facing operating without liability insurance ? which would leave city employees, elected officials and police officers personally liable ? the council drafted resolutions to either annex into Auburn or put a vote to dissolve the city before residents.

Both resolutions were permanently tabled by the council on Wednesday after the vote to accept the new policy.

The city's new policy provides $5 million in coverage, about half the previous policy, and at a higher cost.

Pacific is currently facing nearly $10 million in lawsuits filed by former employees.

After being absent from the previous two meetings regarding annexation and dissolution, Sun was in attendance and defiant at Wednesday's meeting.

"You people want to vote me out, go ahead and do it," he told the audience.

?...by golly I'm staying in and I'm doing exactly what the people voted me in for,? he added.

Many blame Sun's confrontational leadership style for the 103-year-old city's woes, including the Committee to Recall Cy Sun, who have mounted a campaign to put a recall vote before the people.

Currently the recall effort is raising money to pay their lawyers so the case can be considered by the Washington State Supreme Court. A previous decision by the King County Superior Court ruling there was sufficient cause for recall was appealed by Sun.

A recall vote could come as early as April.

Kindness key to happiness and acceptance for children

Dec. 26, 2012 ? Children who make an effort to perform acts of kindness are happier and experience greater acceptance from their peers, suggests new research from the University of British Columbia and the University of California, Riverside.

Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, a professor in UBC's Faculty of Education, and co-author Kristin Layous, of the University of California, Riverside, say that increasing peer acceptance is key to preventing bullying.

In the study, published December 26 by PLOS ONE, researchers examined how to boost happiness in students aged 9 to 11 years. Four hundred students from Vancouver elementary schools were asked to report on their happiness and to identify which of their classmates they would like to work with on school activities. Half of the students were asked by their teachers to perform acts of kindness -- like sharing their lunch or giving their mom a hug when she felt stressed -- and half were asked to keep track of pleasant places they visited -- like the playground or a grandparent's house.

After four weeks, the students again reported on their happiness and identified classmates they would like to work with. While both groups said they were happier, kids that had performed acts of kindness selected higher numbers of classmates to work with on school activities.

"We show that kindness has some real benefits for the personal happiness of children but also for the classroom community," says Schonert-Reichl, also a researcher with the Human Early Learning Partnership at UBC.

According to Schonert-Reichl, bullying tends to increase in Grades 4 and 5. By simply asking students to think about how they can act kindly to those around them, "teachers can create a sense of connectedness in the classroom and reduce the likelihood of bullying."

Consumers, businesses brace for 'fiscal cliff' impact

2 hrs.

For much of this year, business managers have blamed uncertainties over the looming ?fiscal cliff? for their reluctance to pick up the pace of new hiring. ?

As the budget?deadline nears with no deal in sight, we may be about to find out just justified those fears are.

Without a deal, the current budget law calls for a half-trillion-dollar package of tax hikes and spending cuts that most forecasters warn would, if left in force for long, send the U.S. economy back into recession.

Reid: Fiscal cliff failure looks likely, blames Boehner for 'dictatorship'

After strong gains in income in November, American households will see their paychecks shrink a bit when a two-year payroll tax "holiday" expires Dec. 31. The new rate will clip?2 percent from?every dollar of wage income, or?about $20 a week for someone making the median salary of?$50,000 a?year. ?

?People will start to feel it fairly quickly in their paychecks,? said Ian Shepherdson, an economist at Pantheon Macroeconomic Advisers.??I don't think the economy will fall apart completely (in the short term). But we?ve seen already that business confidence is weakening and consumer confidence is weakening. So the uncertainty is a problem.?

Small business owners are especially negative. Just five percent of them plan on adding new jobs, according to the latest monthly survey of its members by the National Federation of Independent Businesses. Only 19 percent said they plan to invest in new equipment in the next three to six months.

The business gloom does not bode well for the U.S. economy, which already faces weak conditions on several other fronts. Export growth is slowing as a?European recession and a?slowdown in China weigh on global demand for American products and services. Growth in government spending likely will slow ? whether or not a budget deal is reached to avoid the deeper cuts already set to kick in. That leaves spending by business and consumers to keep the economy afloat.

It remains to be seen whether businesses are holding back because of the ongoing budget battle. An alternative explanation is that business owners are hoping their can maximize profits by spending less and hiring fewer full-time?workers, instead?making do with temporary or part-time workers more or less indefinitely.

?That means more temporary workers, less investment in the future, lower productivity gains and a lower growth rate in the future,? said UBS economist Drew Matus. ?That?s a worst case scenario. So we all better hopes it?s the fiscal cliff causing some of these people to hold back.?

Though hiring picked up in the second half of this year, the overall pace is far lower than typically seen more than three years into an economic recovery. Since the 2007 recession ended, the number of part-time workers who can?t get full-time work has been stuck at double the level seen when the downturn began. ?

The spectacle of political dysfunction is likely to keep business managers in a sour mood for some?time.?

Though the new package of tax hikes and federal spending cuts is set to begin Jan. 1, the impact of those new measures will be felt gradually. Tax hikes will be spread over a full year. Some government?agencies may postpone spending cuts in?hopes that they'll be reversed before the fiscal year ends Sept. 30. ?

More worrisome is the pending fight over raising the debt ceiling, which will exhaust the government?s borrowing authority in February.

Unless lawmakers agree to extend it, the Treasury faces the same threat of default that threw the budget process into chaos?in July 2011 and cost the U.S. its Triple-A credit rating. The three major bond rating agencies have already warned that failure to reach a credible deal to contain federal budgets deficits could bring yet another downgrade.

US Treasury to take steps to avoid hitting debt ceiling

The best case scenario has Congress returning in January to enact a compromise agreement that President Barack?Obama signs into law, lifting the pall over business and consumers and sparking a fresh spurt of economic growth.

?That?s sort of what happened last summer when we had the debt ceiling fiasco,? said Sheperdson. ?Things rebounded fairly quickly. But while the negotiations were going on, payroll growth rolled over. And I?m nervous that we could get something similar this time.?

Until the budget fiasco is resolved, with businesses sitting on their hands, consumers remain the last best hope to keep the economy afloat. ?

?The consumer has really been holding things up,? said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors. ?Whether its retail sales, whether it's motor vehicle sales and even the biggest sales of all, housing, the consumer has been out there.?

Though wages have remained nearly flat since the recession ended, U.S. households have continued to pay down debt. Record lower interest rates have sparked a wave of refinanced mortgages that have plowed billions of dollars back into household budgets.

But the protracted display of Congressional incompetence may already be weighing on consumer spending, which accounts for 70 cents of every dollar of gross domestic product. ?On Friday, the latest read on consumer confidence, from a monthly Thompson Reuters/University of Michigan survey, showed that consumer sentiment fell sharply in December. ?A private survey, released Monday, similarly showed confidence getting eroded by fiscal cliff worries.

Without a budget deal, higher taxes will crimp consumers? spending power ? but only gradually. That?s why many economists believe the fiscal cliff is really more a like a slope.

Naroff likens the budget deadline to a snowball that will be released Jan. 1, picking up size and force as it continues to roll down the hill.

?To me the biggest uncertainty in all of this ? and for which we don?t have any estimates - is what happens to confidence?? he said. ?If consumers say, ?Hey, this thing is really getting very bad, Congress doesn't know what it is doing. ?I'm cutting back.? then we could have the snowball hit on consumer spending - with weakness in the business side. And then you have a real problem.?

(AP) ? Andrew Neitlich is the last person you'd expect to be rattled by the stock market.

He once worked as a financial analyst picking stocks for a mutual fund. He has huddled with dozens of CEOs in his current career as an executive coach. During the dot-com crash 12 years ago, he kept his wits and did not sell.

But he's selling now.

"You have to trust your government. You have to trust other governments. You have to trust Wall Street," says Neitlich, 47. "And I don't trust any of these."

Defying decades of investment history, ordinary Americans are selling stocks for a fifth year in a row. The selling has not let up despite unprecedented measures by the Federal Reserve to persuade people to buy and the come-hither allure of a levitating market. Stock prices have doubled from March 2009, their low point during the Great Recession.

It's the first time ordinary folks have sold during a sustained bull market since relevant records were first kept during World War II, an examination by The Associated Press has found. The AP analyzed money flowing into and out of stock funds of all kinds, including relatively new exchange-traded funds, which investors like because of their low fees.

"People don't trust the market anymore," says financial historian Charles Geisst of Manhattan College. He says a "crisis of confidence" similar to one after the Crash of 1929 will keep people away from stocks for a generation or more.

The implications for the economy and living standards are unclear but potentially big. If the pullback continues, some experts say, it could lead to lower spending by companies, slower U.S. economic growth and perhaps lower gains for those who remain in the market.

Since they started selling in April 2007, eight months before the start of the Great Recession, individual investors have pulled at least $380 billion from U.S. stock funds, a category that includes both mutual funds and exchange-traded funds, according to estimates by the AP. That is the equivalent of all the money they put into the market in the previous five years.

Instead of stocks, they're putting money into bonds because those are widely perceived as safer investments. Individuals have put more than $1 trillion into bond mutual funds alone since April 2007, according to the Investment Company Institute, a trade group representing investment funds.

Selling stocks during either a downturn or a recovery is unusual. Americans almost always buy more than they sell during both periods.

Since World War II, nine recessions besides the Great Recession have been followed by recoveries lasting at least three years. According to data from the Investment Company Institute, individual investors sold during and after only one of those previous downturns ? the one from November 1973 through March 1975. And back then a scary stock drop around the start of the recovery's third year, 1977, gave people ample reason to get out of the market.

The unusual pullback this time has spread to other big investors ? public and private pension funds, investment brokerages and state and local governments. These groups have sold a total of $861 billion more than they have bought since April 2007, according to the Federal Reserve.

Even foreigners, big purchasers in recent years, are selling now ? $16 billion in the 12 months through September.

As these groups have sold, much of the stock buying has fallen to companies. They've bought $656 billion more than they have sold since April 2007. Companies are mostly buying back their own stock.

On Wall Street, the investor revolt has largely been dismissed as temporary. But doubts are creeping in.

A Citigroup research report sent to customers concludes that the "cult of equities" that fueled buying in the past has little chance of coming back soon. Investor blogs speculate about the "death of equities," a line from a famous BusinessWeek cover story in 1979, another time many people had seemingly given up on stocks. Financial analysts lament how the retreat by Main Street has left daily stock trading at low levels.

The investor retreat may have already hurt the fragile economic recovery.

The number of shares traded each day has fallen 40 percent from before the recession to a 12-year low, according to the New York Stock Exchange. That's cut into earnings of investment banks and online brokers, which earn fees helping others trade stocks. Initial public offerings, another source of Wall Street profits, are happening at one-third the rate before the recession.

And old assumptions about stocks are being tested. One investing gospel is that because stocks generally rise in price, companies don't need to raise their quarterly cash dividends much to attract buyers. But companies are increasing them lately.

Dividends in the S&P 500 rose 11 percent in the 12 months through September, and the number of companies choosing to raise them is the highest in at least 20 years, according to FactSet, a financial data provider. Stocks now throw off more cash in dividends than U.S. government bonds do in interest.

Many on Wall Street think this is an unnatural state that cannot last. After all, people tend to buy stocks because they expect them to rise in price, not because of the dividend. But for much of the history of U.S. stock trading, stocks were considered too risky to be regarded as little more than vehicles for generating dividends. In every year from 1871 through 1958, stocks yielded more in dividends than U.S. bonds did in interest, according to data from Yale economist Robert Shiller ? exactly what is happening now.

So maybe that's normal, and the past five decades were the aberration.

People who think the market will snap back to normal are underestimating how much the Great Recession scared investors, says Ulrike Malmendier, an economist who has studied the effect of the Great Depression on attitudes toward stocks.

She says people are ignoring something called the "experience effect," or the tendency to place great weight on what you most recently went through in deciding how much financial risk to take, even if it runs counter to logic. Extrapolating from her research on "Depression Babies," the title of a 2010 paper she co-wrote, she says many young investors won't fully embrace stocks again for another two decades.

"The Great Recession will have a lasting impact beyond what a standard economic model would predict," says Malmendier, who teaches at the University of California, Berkeley.

She could be wrong, of course. But it's a measure of the psychological blow from the Great Recession that, more than three years since it ended, big institutions, not just amateur investors, are still trimming stocks.

Public pension funds have cut stocks from 71 percent of their holdings before the recession to 66 percent last year, breaking at least 40 years of generally rising stock allocations, according to "State and Local Pensions: What Now?," a book by economist Alicia Munnell. They're shifting money into bonds.

Private pension funds, like those run by big companies, have cut stocks more: from 70 percent of holdings to just under 50 percent, back to the 1995 level.

"People aren't looking to swing for the fences anymore," says Gary Goldstein, an executive recruiter on Wall Street, referring to the bankers and traders he helps get jobs. "They're getting less greedy."

The lack of greed is remarkable given how much official U.S. policy is designed to stoke it.

When Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke launched the first of three bond-buying programs four years ago, he said one aim was to drive Treasury yields so low that frustrated investors would feel they had no choice but to take a risk on stocks. Their buying would push stock prices up, and everyone would be wealthier and spend more. That would help revive the economy.

Sure enough, yields on Treasurys and many other bonds have recently hit record lows, in many cases below the inflation rate. And stock prices have risen. Yet Americans are pulling out of stocks, so deep is their mistrust of them, and perhaps of the Fed itself.

"Fed policy is trying to suck people into risky assets when they shouldn't be there," says Michael Harrington, 58, a former investment fund manager who says he is largely out of stocks. "When this policy fails, as it will, baby boomers will pay the cost in their 401(k)s."

Ordinary Americans are souring on stocks even though stock prices appear attractive relative to earnings. But history shows they can get more attractive yet.

Stocks in the S&P 500 are trading at 14 times what companies earned per share in the past 12 months. Since 1990, they have rarely traded below that level ? that is, cheaper, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices. But that period is unusual. Looking back seven decades to the start of World War II, there were long stretches during which stocks traded below that.

To estimate how much investors have sold so far, the AP considered both money flowing out of mutual funds, which are nearly all held by individual investors, and money flowing into low-fee exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, which bundle securities together to mimic the performance of a market index. ETFs have attracted money from hedge funds and other institutional investors as well as from individuals.

At the request of the AP, Strategic Insight, a consulting firm, used data from investment firms overseeing ETFs to estimate how much individuals have invested in them. Based on its calculations, individuals accounted for 40 percent to 50 percent of money going to U.S. stock ETFs in recent years.

If you assume 50 percent, individual investors have put $194 billion into U.S. stock ETFs since April 2007. But they've also pulled out much more from mutual funds ? $580 billion. The difference is $386 billion, the amount individuals have pulled out of stock funds in all.

If you include the sale of stocks by individuals from brokerage accounts, which is not included in the fund data, the outflow could be much higher. Data from the Federal Reserve, which includes selling from brokerage accounts, suggests individual investors have sold $700 billion or more in the past 5? years. But the Fed figure may overstate the amount sold because it doesn't fully count certain stock transactions.

The good news is that a chastened stock market doesn't necessarily mean a flat stock market.

Bill Gross, the co-head of bond investment firm Pimco, has probably done more than anyone to popularize the notion that stocks will prove disappointing in the coming years. But he says what is dying is not stocks, but the "cult" of stocks. In a recent letter to investors, he suggested stocks might return 4 percent or so each year, about half the long-term level but still ahead of inflation.

And if America's obsession with stocks is over, some excesses associated with it might fade, too.

Maybe more graduates from top colleges will look to other industries besides Wall Street for careers. Of every 100 members of the Harvard undergraduate Class of 2008 who got jobs after graduation, 28 went into financial services, such as helping run mutual funds or hedge funds, according to a March study by two professors at the university's business school. The average for classes four decades ago was six out of 100.

Of course, those counting the small investor out could be wrong.

Three years after that BusinessWeek story on the "death of equities" ran, in 1982, one of the greatest multi-year stock climbs in history began as the little guys shed their fear and started buying. And so they will surely do again, the bulls argue, and stock prices will really rocket.

Neitlich, the executive coach, has his doubts.

Instead of using extra cash to buy stocks, he is buying houses near his home in Sarasota, Fla., and renting them. He says he prefers real estate because it's local and is something he can "control." He says stocks make up 12 percent his $800,000 investment portfolio, down from nearly 100 percent a few years ago.

After the dot-com crash, it seemed as if "things would turn around. Now, I don't know," Neitlich says. "The risks are bigger than before."

My green business heroes of 2012 | GreenBiz.com

Some say, and with reason, that 2012 was the?best year ever.?Never in the history of the world has there been less hunger, less disease and more prosperity. Of course there?s plenty to worry about ? the fiscal cliff, gun violence, chaos in Syria and the Congo ? as always there will be. But, to paraphrase Martin Luther King, the long arc of history bends towards a more just and sustainable world.

In the little corner of the world that occupies much of my attention ? the places where business and sustainability intersect ? it has not been a good year. Global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise. We?re burning more coal, oil and gas than ever. Policy is stuck, in the US and internationally. This will be the hottest year on record in the US, and still people don?t accept the science of climate change. Go figure.

That said, in this final blogpost of 2012,? I?d like to salute some people (again, mostly from the world of business and sustainability) who fought the good fight during the year just past. Some are business people, others are politicians, activists and even journalists, but they are all doing what they can to bend the arc of history. They?re my green business heroes for 2012.

Bill McKibben, the Carbon Tracker Initiative and 350.org: McKibben?s Rolling Stone story ??Global Warming?s Terrifying New Math?? is a pathbreaking work of journalism. If you haven?t read it, please do. It will change the way you think about the fossil fuel industry, including natural gas, the so-called bridge fuel. McKibben (pictured above) builds on the fine work of a small NGO in the UK called the?Carbon Tracker Initiative, which is also well worth your attention. What they?ve found, in essence, is that burning all the fossil fuels now carried on the books of the publicly-traded oil, coal and natural gas companies will drive atmospheric concentrations of CO2 and global temperatures beyond the targets agreed upon by virtually all the world?s governments.

With 350.org, the student organization that he helped start, McKibben this fall organized a national bus tour called?Do The Math?to spread the word about climate change, and demand that colleges and universities to divest their holdings in fossil fuels. Whether that?s the right goal or not ? it seems unwinnable to me ? McKibben is doing what the other big environmental NGOs have not: He is trying to build a climate movement. If he can get some traction, he?s going to force investors to think anew about putting their money into fossil fuels.

Unilever-Logo_2011-03-28Paul Polman, CEO, Unilever: No big company that I?m aware of is doing as much as Unilever to promote sustainability. With bold goals, and a sustainability drive that measures environmental impact from the very beginnings of its supply chains to the consumption of its products, Unilever?s efforts are broader, deeper and more radical than those of its rivals. I?ll have more to say about Polman and Unilever early in 2013 ? his approach carries with it risks ? but this $60 billion behemoth bears watching. Sustainability ? solving the world?s biggest environmental and social problems, albeit with personal care products, laundry detergent and mayonnaise ? has become Unilever?s core strategy.

Michael Bloomberg (and a hat tip to Michael Brune): Thanks to Mayor Bloomberg, New York?s a much greener city?check out the bike lanes next time you visit. Thanks in part to the $50 million that he gave to the Sierra Club and its Beyond Coal campaign, led by executive director Michael Brune,? the US is burning a lot less coal than it used to. (Cheap natural gas prices and EPA rules help, too, of course.) It takes guts for a Republican businessman turned independent mayor to give money to an activist group, but Bloomberg appears to be a politician who does what he believes to be right and then deals with the consequences. Bloomberg also raised he climate issue after superstorm Sandy (duh!), and he leads the?C40 Cities, a network of the world?s biggest cities that are coming together to take climate action.
