Plan an Activity to Look Forward To or Treat Yourself to Eliminate Morning Grumpiness

Plan an Activity to Look Forward To or Treat Yourself to Eliminate Morning Grumpiness Some of us just aren't morning people, and so help the person who tries to talk to us before we get a cup of coffee. That said, if you're regularly grumpy or grouchy in the morning, the problem may be easier to fix than you think.

Remember when we discussed the science behind the power nap and why it worked? The key to the power nap is making sure you get up before you reach the third phase of your sleep cycle, where sleep inertia kicks in and makes your mind and body hate the idea of waking up. If you regularly wake up angry or grouchy, the problem may be that you're regularly waking in that deep part of your sleep cycle. Similarly, if you're only really grumpy when you wake up on workdays, the key may just be that you're not getting enough sleep, you're not getting quality sleep, or you're waking too quickly.

We've discussed how to reboot your sleep cycle and how technology can help you get a better night's sleep, but a simpler solution may be helpful right away: give yourself a good reason to get up that you actually look forward to, or actually makes you feel better about the day. Whether it's a morning workout, a phone call to a good friend, or a great breakfast, having a happy reason to wake can take the edge off of morning grouchiness. You may also want to consider an alarm that tries to wake you at the right part of your sleep cycle, like a sunrise clock or an app that tracks your sleep habits. Hit the link below to read the full report, and pick up a few tips from doctors and sleep experts who addressed the question head on.
