Junior dos Santos blames personal issues, health problems for loss to Cain Velasquez

"I had some personal things going on, a bit of my attention was lacking because of it. And another thing, soon after the fight I went to the hospital and had a scan which showed my creatinine was too high. The normal ratio is up to 300, mine was at 1400. I also had trouble with my urine and kidneys.?Explanation of the doctors is that I passed the line. I had overtrained, and problems could have happened even before the fight. I was so good that I ended up crossing the line, I trained too much. That was the explanation of doctors. Mine is that I was not good in the head, was having personal problems and did not go well mentally into the fight." - Junior dos Santos via UOL

Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos reveals a couple issues he believes hindered his performance against UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez at UFC 155.

The heavyweights first clashed at UFC on FOX on Nov. 12, 2011 where the Brazilian slugger viciously knocked out the then reigning champion, Velasquez, with a devastating overhand right just 64-seconds into the first round.

Immediately following, dos Santos revealed that he had a knee injury heading into the fight that he thought would hinder his performance. Not long after that, Velasquez's teammates from American Kickboxing Academy revealed that Velasquez had a severe knee injury he suffered just days before the fight as well.

With injuries tainting the first meeting, Velasquez was given a second shot at dos Santos after dismantling Antonio Silva in the first round at UFC 146.

Heading into the rematch both fighters stated that they were completely healthy, but dos Santos was unable to recover from a big shot Velasquez landed in the first round or to adjust to the constant pressure Velasquez applied throughout the fight.

Immediately following the loss, dos Santos gave credit to Velasquez for his performance, and asked for a rematch. UFC president Dana White has not shot down the idea, but seems to be more in favor of giving the winner of Overeem vs. Silva the next title shot at heavyweight.
